The white furs of different animals in the arctic region are for different purposes. For example, the white fur of polar bears helps them in becoming less visible on the snow when they go in search of ringed seals used by them as their food. Other than this, the white fur also acts as an insulator and traps heat in the animal's body as in the case of the arctic fox.

The colour of the fur is mainly for camouflage purposes. I mean, red fur on a arctic fox wouldn't be much good since a hare would see it coming a mile off in a totally white surrounding... Equally red fur for a arctic hare would be a real disadvantage, since a fox would have a much higher chance of spotting it, catching it and killing it...
