    Milk thistle is a type of herb or plant which can be commonly found growing in the Mediterranean area. It has been utilised as a medicinal substance to heal many ailments, mainly those associated with the liver. It is also known by names like Mary thistle, holy thistle etc. It is also sometimes referred to by the name Silymarin, which is in fact a combination of the active parts of the herb.

    Milk thistle is thought to have remedial effects on the liver and enhance its functioning. It is mainly used to cure cirrhosis of the liver, inflammation of the liver as well as conditions to do with the gall bladder. It is also thought to do the following–

    Decreasing insulin resistance in individuals with type 2 diabetes

    Decreasing the development of cancer in breast cancer, cervical cancer and prostate cancer.
