Colombo is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka and the country's largest city. Colombo which lies near the mouth of the Kelani River is one of the major ports in the region. It is known for its great breakwaters, which give shelter to a large, artificially built harbor. This harbour is connected with Beira Lake by a canal and locks. The country's bulk of foreign trade is handled at this port which is also an important fueling station.

The city's industry produces metal goods, textile, clothing and chemicals. The administrative capital of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayawardenepura (Kotte) which lies on the outskirts of Colombo. The capital is a contrast of modern structures and broad avenues along with labyrinthine streets and worn out buildings. Pasteur Institution is the biggest hospital in the city. Places of worship include churches, mosques and Buddhist temples. The city is the site for the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka Technical College and other institutions of learning. The city's original name was Kana-totta. Arabs called it Kolambu and Portuguese changed it into Colombo in 1517 to honour Christopher Columbus. The Dutch occupied the city in 1656 and the British in 1796.  According to the 2001 census, the city's population was 642,63.
