The first name Monet is both a masculine as well as a feminine first name. It has been derived from a French last name. The French last name Monet has, in turn, been derived from either the first name Hamon or the first name Edmond. It was also the last name of the well-known French impressionist painter Claude Monet.

Claude Monet was also known as Oscar-Claude Monet or Claude Oscar Monet. He was born to Adolphe and Louise Justine Monet on 90 Rue Laffitte in the ninth arrondissement of the city of Paris, the capital of France on November 14, 1840. He founded the impressionist movement of painting in France. The name of the movement, impressionism, was derived from the title of one of his most famous works, Impression, Sunrise. He died of lung cancer at the age of 86 in the city of Giverny in France on December 5, 1926.
