Why Don't Some People Believe In GOD?

Answer Question

15 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Why don't you believe in Zeus, Horus, or Krishna? Everyone is an atheist to some regard. You are actually asking, "Why don't people believe in MY God?". Here lies the problem of "gods" and religion. There is no proof of any kind supporting the existence of any god, yours or otherwise. The open interpretations this leaves has resulted in a history of wars and violence between each religion, all of whom believe their beliefs are the path to salvation. Mankind will not move forward until these pathetic superstitions are put behind us.

You claim that there is no proof of God, you believe in some "big bang theory" or something, which is just that a theory. Just a way for a man to explain something he cannot comprehend. This could also be said about God, but somewhat more conceivable than totally random chance.

I've been wondering the exact opposite for fifteen years. Why do people believe in god?
I don't believe in god, yours or anyone else's, because it makes no sense to me. It was a nice fairytale to grow up with - no, wait, I'm lying. It wasn't nice, it was terrifying. Either way, it just doesn't add up. To anything.
Believing in the Christian god (I can't very well speak for other faiths) requires you to say "I don't know why I must do this, and I won't find out because the same thing that tells me I must do this also says I can't question it".
It's a tail-biting snake. You cannot question god's existence or motives because the god whose existence or motives you cannot question said so. You know what else functions on this principle? Dictatorship.
Thanks, but no thanks. I refuse to adhere to anything that prohibits questioning and demands that I keep myself in a permanent state of ignorance and fear.
If you ask me, if there was such a thing as an all-loving god, he would never inflict such a thing on his followers.

Its God who allows you to wake up and breathe and recognize who you are and allows you the use of your limbs. God is real you just have not allowed him to show himself to you in a more personal way. Besides the fact he keeps allowing you to breathe. I pray that he shows himself to you, not that he has to prove himself but because I believe you need to know that you have a choice and if you know the truth it will make you free.

Speak for yourself. For ten years I went to church every sunday, prayed every day, lived in constant fear and confusion at the fact that what I was supposed to believe contradicted everything that I knew made sense - then I realized I did have a choice and dropped the whole thing. Thanks for your concern, but I've never been so free.

This question is very idiotic. I assume you speaking about God the Father of "Jesus Christ". Why would you expect everyone to believe in your God.  Christianity is not the only religion in the world. There are numerous amounts of Gods that people believe in. Like that other guy said, why don't you believe in those gods? But I guess the only way to answer this is like this: It is hard for some people to believe and commit their life to something that they can not prove. There is no proof of God/ Jesus. Some people will argue and say no the bible is proof that is God's word...... If you are one of these people, you need to wake up. That book has been revised so many times it's not even funny. I think that you people that get frustrated when other people do not believe in "God" should at least take a little comfort that these people have Faith in something... Even though they are not the same religious views you share.

Its not about what the writings because the bible is given for our edifying, But when you have been delivered from drugs and you have not been to a hospital for help and you didnt have to go through a detox you know God is real. Or when you know that you have had a disease because the doctor has said you have it and after an encounter with the ONE TRUE LIVING GOD, you go back to the doctor and they tell you that you have no trace of that disease. See you cant prove that there is not a God.

To Aurby : Yeah but I have NEVER seen or heard of something like that. And even if a drug addict stopped being one or someone's herpes went away, doesn't mean its because of a divine intervention. What happens if the claims of such miracle were made by someone who is sick, they could have made it all up for what I can see. You should revise your comment because you just believed something someone said without actually seeing it for yourself, you just assume they are telling the truth.

I think the fundamental problem with religious belief is that it's a belief. Even setting aside the fact that it's something that exceeds the limits of empirical knowledge and logic and enters a realm of little more than guesswork, it is essentially undeniable.
The problem with that is that it's then possible to attach virtually any value or concept to the belief in question and to essentially give it a "free ride" to something resembling legitimacy. If you allow yourself to simply "believe" something, despite a lack of evidence to support it, you are creating a justification for believing any number of related things, and equally without evidence.

The reason for anyone to say they do not believe in God is because they have not YET experienced him. Keep living and if his will to allow you to take another breath, then you will know he is real. I know he is real becaue I know what and where he has brought me and my family from and no one could have done that but GOD.

Aurby, You KNOW he is real because you want him to be, you really only want your reward in heaven, why can't you give yourself the credit for making life better for your family instead of blindly believing that God did it. Do you think if such a God existed he could/would waste time solving mere mortals daily woes. In time you'll find there are too many unanswered and avoided questions in your faith system. If you STOP asking those questions, then a piece of you will die intellectually every day

Some people do not see a need for an ultimate, all-powerful, all-knowing being. Some believe "god" is simply a form of governmental control, to make people afraid of things the government cannot see them doing. The threat of eternal punishment can be very effective.  Some people choose to buck convention and think outside the box. There is no one answer to your question.

I first lost my faith the first time I read the Bible, cover to cover, and shockingly discovered that God was two completely different characters. OTG (Old Testament God) vs NTG. There was a lot more to it, but that was the pebble that started the landslide.

I once believed in god but i was little and i believed in unicorns too.. I believe the bible is a fake.. I have a brother who keeps pointing out that i don't pray before i eat.. I have a best friend thats trying to convince me to be christian.. I don't let anybody tell me to change who i am! I am me.. Not anyone else! Being atheist isn't a bad thing... Everyone gets to choose their religion and i happened to pick atheist! If anyone thinks thats a bad thing then you can all burn in "he**!" so back to the question.. Some people just don't think some random person just happened to know jesus and jesus told him everything and the random person wrote a book and called it the bible! No i don't think so..

I think that some people do not believe in god because if there is a god he has not shown them he is there.  Look at people who are tortures, raped and murdered i imagine that they beg god please help me, god please no, and nothing happens.  I think that also people do not believe in what they cannot prove.  Everyone believes what they want to believe.  I personally do not know if i believe in god, but i know there is some higher power that is out there, otherwise i would be dead by now

Sometimes it is so hard for people to reconcile the suffering that goes on with the goodness of God that the only recourse is to not think about it.

I feel that some people don't believe in God because they just simply don't want to believe, they don't want to feel that they will have to answer to a higher power so they try to justify their wrongs and live their lives they way they want to  without correction or discipline

Again, how do you KNOW this? You are assuming based on word of mouth and man made writings. If you want to use the same logic you just applied, YOU are pretending to be blind and know that you really have no idea if god(s) exist and/or if they do/did exist, what their past, present, or future actions are/were/will be.

No what i say and BELIEVE , hasn't made by mouth , in every books that all 124000 guides of god had brought is saying it.
You are right about that we don't know their past or futire or anything , but let me tell you something , if i pick a rock up and shot it to your head, you'll feel the pain , but you can't see it , you can't show it to anyone , you can't talk to it or anything.
And everyone believe in what they've got reason why on that , god is what i belive and i have eoungh reason for it

Some people do not believe in God because of several reasons. 1 reason could be that something tragic happened in their life and they may have prayed for a different outcome and because they didnt get the outcome they wanted, they figure that maybe God is not real or else they would have gotten a better result. Some people just refuse the obvious and can not explain how things work or how things have become.

Everything we know about God was taught to us by other people, usually when we were children, we were all born an atheist with no concept of God(s). There is no communication from supernatural realms, so why should anyone want to believe in God, if you do, then you are a slave to whatever it is others want you to believe is God's will.

Aurby - Don't listen to the lies. I know that it is God who changed your life. He changed mine too. This is something I couldn't have done on my own. I feel sad for the people who have not experienced Him. What's even sadder is that they will all stand before them and give an account for everything they have ever said to discourage the ones who are seeking Him. I am sincere when I say that it saddens me. I wish I could convince people. But even Jesus didn't force anyone to believe in him
