There are two main ways: Refill or recycle. You could buy an ink cartridge refill kit whereby you actually inject ink back into the empty cartridge, seal it and thus reuse it. It is a cheap option, but it can be quite messy and the actual print quality may not be quite as good.

Otherwise you can recycle your ink cartridge by sending it back to the company you bought it from. These cartridges are then remanufactured, that is to say they go through a process during which they are thoroughly cleaned, checked, filled with ink and repackaged. This is an environmentally friendly option as much less resource is used to create another ink cartridge. Remanufactured ink cartridges are also capable of producing very high quality prints. A couple of companies who offer a return scheme include Cartridge SAVE (UK) and Castle Ink (USA).
