Can You Tell Me Something About The Republic Of Congo?

    The Democratic Republic of Congo was formerly known as Zaire. It is a country in the centre of the African continent as is bordered by Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia and Anglola.

    It covers an area of 905 000 square miles and has the city Kinshasa as its capital. The Congo River basin has the second largest remaining rainforest in the world and the climate is tropical. Among some of the natural wonders in Congo are Lake Tanganika and the Victoria Falls.

    The population of the Congo is about 50 million people and the population is growing at the rate of about 3 per cent per year. The people who live in the Congo are mostly of African descent but within these are 200 distinct cultural groups. Many different languages are spoken – one for each cultural group but the main national languages are French (the official one), Swahili, Lingala, Kikongo and Tshiluba.

    The country has been a Repubic and changed its name in 1997.
