One specific oral proteolytic enzymes deserves specific mention since it is the only enzyme listed in the PDR as an orally administered anti-inflammatory enzymes medication approved for use in the U.S. it is listed in the PDR under the trade name 'Bromase' and contains bromalein. The mechanism of action is listed as a 'postaglandin modulator'. The treatment indication is listed as 'inflammatory conditions resulting from prostaglandin metabolism, surgical producers, sports activities, and other trauma'.
Similar preparations have been available in Europe for around 40 years. The most frequent prescribed enzyme medications are the various proteolytic or hydrolytic enzyme mixtures. These includes the original enzyme mixture developed in the New York City by Dr. Wolf and Benitez. They are manufactured and disturbed worldwide by MUCOS pharma are available. They include the original anti –inflammatory preparation from Dr. Wolf and Benitez (Wobenzyme), and and intermediate strength anti –inflammatory preparation (Mulsal). These preparations are also manufactured in the new formulation with same name but follow by the letter 'N'. In addition, rheumatologic mixtures (phlogenzyme) and an oncologic mixture (Wob Mugos) are also available from the same manufacturer. At the present, these drugs are not approved for the medical use in the United States, but one of the mixtures is the subject of an ongoing FDA approved clinical study. It has its own FDA IND (investigational New Drug) number, a preliminary step before a drug can be considered for investigation and possible subsequent approval.
