It really depends on which country you are applying for, which country you are resident, the passport you hold and other factors.
For example are you applying for a holiday visit, or are you intending to work.
Are you visiting family, and do you have a sponsor.
The consular relationship that the two countries have is rather important because for example, if you are applying to America at the moment from a country that is considered hostile to America, they can pick though your details for about 6 months, and there is nothing you can do about it, and in the end you may find they refuse your visa and are not obliged to
give you a reason.
However if it is your second application and they have already
given you a visa in the past and they can see that you returned to your country of origin in the allocated time, the visa could take a month or even less. You need to ask at the embassy of the country you intend to visit, in your nearest city
they will be able to give you more specific advice.
