    Captain Arthur Hastings is a fictional literary character the sidekick of legendary detective Hercule Poirot the creation of the queen of crime stories Agatha Christie; in most of the novels that feature Captain Hastings he is portrayed as the narrator.  

    Captain Hastings, OBE, is depicted as a retired army officer who had seen action in World War I who is Poirot's constant companion when he is investigating a case serving as a touchstone for Poirot's musings; often Hastings is shown as trusting and unable to read the motives of others thinking the best of everyone. Hastings later settles with his wife in Argentina and becomes a ranch owner though he continues to visit England now and then and renew his acquaintance with Poirot.

    In the television series Agatha Christie's Poirot, first broadcast in January 1989 by LWT and later by ITV Productions which appeared in the US as 'Poirot' Captain Hastings played by Hugh Fraser features in most episodes with Poirot played by David Suchet although in the original stories Hastings appears only in a few short stories and 8 novels out of a total of 34. Captain Hastings can be considered as a parallel character to Dr. Watson the companion of Sherlock Holmes created by Arthur Conan Doyle.
