It is formed of two words: hind and ward. The word hind has its origin in the Greek word 'hinten'. Later it was adapted by the Old English as Hindan and meant 'from behind or at the back'. Then, it was modified by the Middle English as 'hinde'. The word –weard means towards.

    Hind ward is an adjective and means backward. Hind means located at the back or at the rear end. 'Ward' is a suffix used to denote spatial or temporal direction, indicated by the previous component of the word. Thus, hind ward denotes behind, rearward or towards the posterior.
