Of course you should live your own life how you want. But when your family or friends or parents are bringing something to your attention there could be a very good reason. I don't resent the way I have lived my life, but I wish I would have listened more when people who had been in my shoes were warning me of my path. So that question can have many answers, depends on what your REALLY talking about.

That is how I live my life. I don't live my life in someone else's eyes but in my own. It is good to live independently. My actions in life will not be driven by others but by my own. For, I am me thus, I will live my life the way I see fit.

I am not saying that you shouldn't take honest advice from the people who care about you but make the best out of your own life and not live according to other people's expectations.
