Czechoslovakia was a country which united the Czech people with the Slovaks from 1918 until 1992. The land which it refers to is located between Central and Eastern Europe.
In 1918 Czechoslovakia gained it's independence from the Austro-Hungarian empire at the end of World War I. It became a Communist country under from 1948 until 1989, although there were several changes to it's formation during World War II and it was governed by Soviet Rule following the war.
From 1990-1992 it became the federal democratic republic of the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, following the Velvet Revolution, which put a non-violent end to the communist government.
Nationalist tensions began to grow between the Czechs and the Slovaks in the early 90s, but luckily a peaceful decision for both republics to become countries was reached. From 1st January 1993, two countries named Czech Republic and Slovakia emerged.
The capital of the Czech Republic is Prague, whilst the capital of Slovakia is Bratislava.
