What Does Helm Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Literally the word 'helm' conveys the idea of a handle or a wheel that is used to steer a ship or a boat. But the figurative uses of the word are what makes it one of the quite often used terms.

Taking the charge of a boat or a ship is called taking helm and also beginning of the steering of a boat is called helm. And from these uses came the idiom 'at the helm' which is a term that can be used when somebody is taking charge of an organisation or a project. We find the word used most often in this context because these days or even earlier the person at the leadership position of a business organisation is very important in giving direction to the organisation and as economy is one of the most talked about topic among the people, the use of the word is also happened quite often.
