There are three types of networks such as LAN, MAN and WAN.

LAN also known as Local area network connects computers in a single building, organization or neighboring building. It connects computers over relatively shorter distances and are mostly used by organizations and educational institutions for information and data sharing.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) connects computers on the city wide basis. Its distance covered is shorter than WAN and greater than LAN

WAN (Wide Area Network) is the connection of many networks or LANS. The example of WAN is internet which connects billions of computers over wide geographically dispersed areas.

The other similar network types include CAN (Campus Area Network), Storage Area Network (SAN), System Area Network, Wireless Local Area Network etc.
