Can A Dog Have Milk Without Having Puppies?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Normally, milk production in dogs is started during advanced stages of pregnancy few days before delivery of puppies. Sometimes, this milk production starts immediately after delivery. Milk is produced under the influence of a hormone called prolactin. Other than nursing periods, dogs can have milk production due to abnormalities of this hormone. Following are some conditions that can cause milk production in dog.
    1. False pregnancy
    2. Hypothyroidism
    3. Tumors in the anterior pituitary gland
All above mentioned conditions are treatable. False pregnancy is self treated. If your dog is having milk production without nursing periods then take her to vet for differential diagnosis and treatment.
