Compared to catx cable, fiber optic cable:

    • Is thinner
    • Has an almost unlimited throughput (band-width)
    • Has little or no signal loss
    • Is not susceptible to electrical interference
    • Requires less power
    • Is somewhat more expensive to install

Cat X is a twisted-pair line similar to your telephone inside wiring, however it has many more twists per inch (TPI). It is inexpensive and fast if you have a high TPI and well-crimped connectors. Ideal for single-building network installs, as it's cheap and tough.

Fiber is hella fast, but so expensive it should only be considered for intra-building (campus) links. Splicing it involves burnishing the glass cable, which is a job best contracted out. You have to be very careful bending the wire and putting pressure on it with anything, including tiewraps.
