Where Can You Get Fresh Water Mussels?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Freshwater mussels are animals that are from the mollusk order of Unionoida. They are animals who are found only in freshwater and hence the name freshwater mussels. They are large bi-valved animals with shells. They live in burrowed in sand and gravel at the bottom of rivers and streams. Some are also found in lakes, ponds and reservoirs. They don't travel in search of food; on the contrary their food drifts in their direction. Their diet is made-up of tiny plants and animals called plankton.

Mussels are not animals who move much and do most of their actions with the assistance of a muscular foot which allows them to burrow and limited amount of travel. These animals do not possess eyes but have the uncanny ability to attract host fishes towards them. United States is the country which is unrivalled as far as the fresh water mussel variety is concerned. Almost 300 types of mussels are found in the watershed of the Mississippi river in United States.
