What Happened With The Sex Pistols And Bill Grundy?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Sex Pistols came to national attention as much for their behaviour as their music. They were known to be brash and outspoken. In 1976, after the release of their groundbreaking debut single, Anarchy in the UK, iconic punk rock band, Sex Pistols made an appearance on the Today television show which was hosted by Bill Grundy.

The interview was typically obnoxious, with Grundy patronizing them, and then goading them to swear. The Sex Pistols with their characteristic brash punk attitude did not disappoint and a controversy ensued. Their swearing on an early evening live broadcast generated a storm of publicity. The tabloid newspapers were filled with the ensuing furore for days. Grundy was suspended, although later reinstated. But the interview spelt the end of his career.

The amount of publicity generated brought punk into the mainstream, and made the Sex Pistols a household name.
