Neurodegenerative disease is a disease of the nervous system in which brain and spinal cord cells are lost progressively. These nerve cells known as neurons deteriorate and start to function abnormally. This can result is a lot of disabilities such as problems in movement and memory related problems. Since brain and spinal cells are not regenerated, excessive damage to them can lead to devastating damage to the body.
According to some sources this deterioration of nerve cells is caused by infectious proteins known as prions. Stroke, heat stress, head and spinal cord trauma (and bleeding that occurs in the brain, the pressure can causes the death of one or more neurons and hence can lead to Neurodegenerative diseases. At times this disease begins long before a patient notices any visible symptoms.
It is known as an incurable disease. Although some treatment using L-dopa does exists for Parkinson's disease. It can inhibit symptoms for a short time. Extensive research is being carried out in areas concerning stem cell treatment and gene therapy.
Below is the list of some of the Neurodegenerative diseases:
• Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseases
• HIV-associated dementia
