Who Wrote Clockwork Orange?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Clockwork Orange was published in 1962, having been written by Anthony Burgess.
He started writing in the late 1950's having published three novels.  However, Clockwork Orange was written after somewhat of a difficult period for Burgess.  In 1959, at the age of 42 Burgess was working as a teacher in Borneo for the Colonial Service.  He fell ill and was told that he had an incurable brain tumour and that he would live only for a year.

Burgess returned to Britain and was worried  that he had to write to provide for his wife after his death.  He decided that he would write four novels during the final year of his life.

He set to work, churning out a fantastic amount of words every day.  However, toward the end of his 'final year' he was re-examined whilst in Britain and was told that no trace of a tumour could be found.  He lived for a further 35 years.  It is thought that some of the surreal moments in Clockwork Orange are linked in with hsi belief that was was shortly to die and then discovering that he was not terminally ill.
