The atomic bomb and weapons of mass destruction are used today as a deterrent. The idea is that if a country's government believes that you are likely to retaliate with atomic weaponry, they will not attack you with atomic weapons first. A strange line of thought, which has worked so far, but may be brought to an abrupt end when one considers that there are now people in the world for whom death has no meaning, and the destruction of a people even less.
