Where Did God Send Jonah?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

God essentially ordered Jonah to go and prophesy to Nineveh, which was a city in ancient Assyria. It is referred to as an "exceeding great city", as per the Book of Jonah. It is said to have been situated on the eastern shore of the Tigris which falls in modern-day Mosul, which is in Iraq. The entire extensive area is at present one vast area of ruins.

Jonah, the son of Amittai hailed from the Galilean village known as Gath-hepher, close to Nazareth. Wishing to escape God's command Jonah flees to Joppa and then sails to Tarshish. This is when a raging storm arises. Seeing that this particular storm is no ordinary one, the sailors proceed to cast lots, and find out that Jonah is to blame. Jonah admits this, and states that if he is thrown overboard, the storm will cease. Thus, he is thrown him overboard, following which the seas calm.

He of course prays, thanks God and requests God's forgiveness after being saved following being swallowed by a great fish. God then commands the fish to heave Jonah out.
