Verona is home to a number of ancient monuments and historical buildings dating from the Roman period to medieval times. The historic buildings at Verona have withstood the centuries well and are in a better condition; UNESCO has declared the entire town as a world heritage site.
One of the most famous monuments in Verona is the Arena, a Roman amphitheatre built way back in 30 AD; it is the third largest of its kind and is still in use today mainly to host fairs, events or outdoor operas. The Arena is 144 meters long and has a seating capacity of about 25,000. Some other monuments from the Roman period are a Roman theatre, the Gavi Arch, the Porta dei Borsari an archway and Porta dei Leoni, an ancient city gate.
Among medieval monuments the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore (built in the12th century), is an exquisite specimen of Romanesque architecture noted for its façade, pillars and columns, bas-relief and frescoes and an imposing 72 meter tall bell tower. The Basilica of San Lorenzo, the St. Maria Antica church and the St. Anastasia church are some of the other monuments dating from the Middle Ages.
