Answer Question

The name Canada has its roots in the word 'kanata', which means village or settlement. It was a word of First Nation origin. First Nation was a term that included the native tribes of North America.

People residing in a Quebec City first used the word in 1535. They were directing Jacques Cartier, a French explorer, to a village called Stadacona. Later a French Colony set up by the Saint Lawrence River was known as Canada, New France. The British divided the colony into two called Upper and Lower Canada.

It was known till about 1841 as the British Province of Canada, and later as the Dominion of Canada till about 1950. Since the Canada Act of 1982 it has been known officially as Canada.
