What Happens To A Football Club If They Get Into Debt And Cannot Pay It Off?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In modern day football we are seeing many clubs get into financial difficulty.
There are many reasons why this is happening:
    * Player wages are becoming far too high for clubs to manage.
    * Teams that get relegated from the top leagues have to take a massive drop in income.
    * Running a football club has become a lot more expensive.

If a football club finds it cannot pay their debtors off then yes they can apply to go into administration.
If a team is put into administration their debts can be sorted out by professionals and there is a better chance that the club will survive.

However going into administration has some nasty consequences for the respective club. The main one being that the club has to take a -10 point deduction during the season they have applied to go into administration or the following season.

A deduction in points can potentially see a team loose out on being promoted or in worse cases see a team be relegated from their league.
