Where Is Sossusvlei National Park?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It's part of the Namib desert, in Namibia. A Vlei is a dried lake bed, and there are 3 in the park.  Sossusvlei is the biggest, but Dead Vlei is more scenic.  There is also a smaller, Hidden Vlei.

Public transport links to Sossusvlei aren't good.  Travellers usually find it easiest to stay at one of the luxury camps that run their own transport into the park, although cheaper accomodation is available near the park gates at Sesriem.

4-wheel drive is recommended. There are limited tracks for 2-wheel drive vehicles. You can get into the see much of the park using a 2-wheel vehicle, but it will require a lot of walking (in high heat).

This park is famous for its red sand dunes, said to be highest in the world.  One, Big Daddy, is over 300m tall.  Climbing the dunes to appreciate the view is an essential part of visiting, but don't forget to take LOTS of water with you.
