Scan your computer for spyware, junk software that is illicitly installed when you visit some web sites or click a link in a spam email. There are lots of free software applications that you can download to do this, including Ad-Aware, Spyware Doctor, Spy Sweeper and Webroot. If you haven't done this before, the scan can take several minutes. Thereafter, regularly update your spyware software and then run a scan.

Also ensure that your anti-virus software and operating system software is up to date. Most anti-virus applications recommend that you scan your computer at least once a week and check for updates on a daily basis.

Make sure, too, that your browser is up to date, and that your internet options control panel contains the optimum settings. Go Start/Control Panel/Internet Options and reduce the number of days for which history is stored. Is it really necessary to keep track of 30 days' worth of browsing? Regularly purge temporary browser files too. Before careful when deleting cookies not to ice ones that you need.
