These immortal words were uttered by Harold Macmillan (1894-1986) who was British Prime Minister 1957-1963. This slogan was part of his election campaign, since it symbolised the fact that Britain had got back on its feet after the war had ended and life was now full of the little luxuries which had never before been available to the masses.
Macmillan was a progressive leader and he actively encouraged some of the overseas British colonies to achieve independence, which was summed up in his 'Winds of Change' speech, where he acknowledged that basically the days of the British Empire were no more and colonies should be independent of Britain. He also tried to get Britain into the European Economic Community, but was blocked by the French.
He retired in 1963, mainly due to ill health, but his Government had been hit by the scandal of the Profumo affiar, immediately prior to his resignation.
