When Was The Last Melody Maker Produced?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Melody Maker the oldest weekly music newspaper cum magazine first published in 1926 recently merged with its long time rival New Musical Express (NME) and ceased publication from December 25, 2000. The publishers IPC Media who also own the NME took the decision after sales dropped by more than 21% in recent times; the reason being the increasing number of music sites on the Internet.

Melody Maker was famous as a newspaper that reported the latest happenings in the world of music especially jazz and the pop culture; the classifieds section of the newspaper which was quite extensive was particularly popular among the readers. The newspaper was highly popular in the 1970s with as many as 250,000 being sold per week. The newspaper was slow to recognize new trends in the world of music as was evident in its scanty coverage of phenomena like rock n roll and punk music.
