A DSS can take so many different and diverse forms. The DSS or the Decision support systems are the class of computer-based information systems including the knowledge based systems that support the decision making activities. In common, we can say that a DSS is simply a computerized system that is used for the help in making decisions. As there are so many approaches to this decision-making and because of the wide range of the domains in which the decisions are made, the concept of decision support system (DSS) is very broad. A decision is an option between the alternatives based on estimates of the values of those alternatives.

Clinical decision support system for medical diagnosis is one of the examples of the Decision support systems. Other examples may include a bank loan officer who is verifying the credit of a loan applicant or an engineering firm that has bids on numerous projects and needs to be familiar with if they can be competitive with their costs. DSS is broadly used in business and the management areas. In agricultural production, many of the DSS applications are playing vital role. DSS provides supports for the decision makers in both the semi-structured and the unstructured problems. It is very supportive to the managers at many different levels.
