All life forms pollute their own environment and make it uninhabitable for other life forms, too. Mankind seems to do that on a grander scale than most. Eventually, we will kill ourselves off, and we won't have to worry about it anymore.
One of the disadvantages of Capitalism is that it allows personal profit at the expense of the common good. The division of labor in our society means that I can derive advantage from the pollution generated by someone else, and I don't have to know about it.
I believe one of the jobs of Government is to defend the common good against such assaults, and to look out for those most affected by them. The forms of representative government we now practice in the world don't seem to do that very well. The profit derived from assaulting the environment means that there is very little incentive to change.
The "polluters should pay" idea is quite attractive, until you get to the details. (Auto pollution would cease very quickly if the exhaust pipe ran to the passenger compartment. However, as a usable transportation mode, such a vehicle would be off the list.) Almost none of us is nomadic anymore, so we cannot just move on when the pollution gets too bad. We have to figure out what level we can live with where we are. Cleaning up after ourselves, with scrubbers and catalytic converters and "carbon offset forests" and the like, is not a bad idea, provided the cure does not end up being worse than the disease. (Technological solutions tend to cause more problems than they solve.)
I believe the ultimate solution will come from
- awareness of the issues involved
- moral strength
- reverence/respect for the world we live in.
