You can stop unwanted pop-ups with your browser. I use Firefox (it is in my opinion the best browser available at the moment for a number of reasons) and, once installed, you just need to go to 'Preferences' and then 'Content' to block pop-ups. Under 'Privacy' you can block cookies.
