Throughout more than a century starting from 1890 up to 1998, the United States laid claimed to having the tallest towers or bulidings in the world. Most of these are located in New York and only on two occassions the title was claimed by Chicago. All of these landmarks are still in existence up to the present with one exception. The TwinTowers, which briefly held the title, was destroyed on September 11, 2000. The tallest building at the time of the incident was The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

At present, the honor belongs to Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan which rose to a height of 1,671 feet., 188 feet more than The Petronas Towers. At the base is located a five story shopping mall with the Taiwan Stock Exchange occupying seven floors. Several restaurants are located in the next upper floors offering fantastic views. An indoor observation deck is on the 89th floor while the outdoor deck sits two floors above. The structure was inspired by traditional Chinese buildings.
