    As of 31 August 2008 estimate, Italy's population is about 59,905,225 and according to January 1, 2009 estimate Italy's population rose to 60,090,400, making it 23rd most populous country and fourth in European Union [Source: Europe Population] . And, October 2001's census showed a total population of 57,110,144.  Italy's population density, at 196.1 persons per kilometre, is the fifth highest in the European Union.
