This seemingly quintessential English breed originally came from France where it was known as the Basset Artésian-normand. It was introduced to Britain by Sir Everett Millais and George R. Krehl.
The first of this type of dog to win an award was the tri-coloured Model which in 1875 was shown in Wolverhampton. A short time after Lord Onslow imported Fino and Finette and Krehl brought of Fino de Paris. It became the forefather of a string of champions.
Sir Everett Millais wrote, 'Bassets: Their use and breeding'. He also compiled the official standard which was taken up by The British Basset Hound Club.
The breed found its way to the United States at about the same time. From 1800 it was bred there with a good deal of success. The basic type was heavier and more eye catching. However the interest in the dog was more to do with its unusual appearance than its hunting capabilities.

The Basset Hound originated in France in the 1500s, but is today popular in the UK and the United States.

It is thought that the Basset Hound may descend from miniaturised versions of bloodhounds. Certainly there is a strong resemblance between the Basset Hound and bloodhounds, especially in facial features, the smooth coat and the long droopy ears. This most notable and obvious difference is in their stature. A Basset Hound is usually weighs between 18 to 27 kg and attains a height of around 33 to 38 cm.

By comparison, the Bloodhound is around double the size, weighing between 36 to 50 kg and standing 58 to 69 cm.

A white breed of bloodhound that was popular in Medieval Europe was the Talbot Hound. By the 1600s, though the breed had died out, though its genes continue in a wide variety of breeds including the tricoloured Basset Hound and Boxers.
