On the 21st of January 1998 news broke in mainstream press that the President of the United States had had a sexual relationship with his intern Monica Lewinsky. The news had already got out on the 17th of January. The news had broken out because of taped recordings that Linda Tripp a friend of Monica Lewinsky had made of their conversations about this subject. On hearing of the denials of the President in the Paula Jones case she delivered the tapes to independent council Kenneth Star.

Clinton denied the affair entirely and Monica refused to say anything at all. It was only when she was offered a deal that protected her interest in the form of transaction immunity, that she started laying it all neatly on the line. She even had an ace up her sleeve; a dress that had Clinton's seed on it that had conveniently not been sent to the cleaners. Well the only thing needing any cleaning now was the President's reputation.
