What Is The Difference Between A Straight Edge And A Ruler?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A straight edge is a ruler that looks like an L and  you can measure at angles and more with it, a ruler is a straight instrument, and isn't used the same as a straight edge, it's smaller for one than the edge. Hope this helps, good luck.

tiggersmom, it seems to me you have described something similar to a carpenter's square. A straightedge is one of two instruments allowed in the field of geometry for constructing certain figures and geometric relationships. The other is a compass (or dividers, which are built similar to a compass but only copy distances, rather than make arc marks). The characteristic of these devices that is important in geometry is that they have no means of measuring, i.e. no marks, the way a ruler has.
