Hoy basically is one of the Orkney Islands located in Scotland. The total area of this island is said to be 55 square miles, which makes it the second biggest of the Orkney Islands after the Mainland.

The spectacular shoreline of Hoy is what generally greets travelers who are visiting the Orkney Island by ferryboat from the Scottish mainland. It generally has limits of many various types; a number of highest cliffs in UK are found here. The peak point in Orkney, Ward Hill, is based in Hoy.

The chief naval base for Scapa Flow in both the World Wars was located in at the Lyness in the south-eastern region of the Island. The northern portion of the Island has been allocated as a RSPB reserve because of its significance for birdlife, predominantly Great skuas and red-throated divers.
