The only safe way that I know of is to purchase mouse traps and place them in locations where your little dog can't get to them.
There are a couple new types of traps now. One is a catch and release and the other is made of plastic and it is a much better and safer trap than the wooden ones. Just apply a little peanut butter on it, set and it's ready too go. You don't have to worry about getting your fingers caught in it and all you have to do to release the dead rodent is to squeeze the clamp.
