Bill Clinton was one of the most popular presidents ever in his day. In spite of his many misdemeaners, it's quite possible that he could have won a 3rd term in office if he had been allowed to run.
Under his tenure the American economy went from strength to strength. Spending on social services soared at the same time that crime rates fell and people felt more secure in their jobs, about getting health care, and that they wouldn't be victims of crime. The good fiscal stewardship during Clinton's tenure will bode well as a legacy, something that the Democratic party will be able to point to to support the case for them getting the presidency back in 2008.
Where Clinton went wrong was sex scandals. Even people who really liked him blanched at the stupidity of it. And people who were won by his social agenda and evident Christian belief, were completely turned off by any other left-wing ideas after they saw where Clinton's "liberalism" had taken him. Clinton's scandals are probably what caused Al Gore to (sort of) lose the election in 2000. Another 8 years of Democratic presidency might have made a big difference from the USA we see today.
