In What Year Was The Wizard Of Oz Released In The Uk In Bedfordshire Cinemas?

A friend at work believes that as a child of 6 in 1959 he saw the wizard of oz on its first realease in a cinema in luton in bedfordshire. I know the movie came out in 1939 but is it correct that a movie realeased in 1939 would take untill 1959 to be released in some cinemas in the UK and if so why the delay.

I can only assume that it was not infact the first release of the film that your friend saw (considering that he wasn't born the first time it was actually released).

I'm not too sure about Bedfordshire exactly, but the film was re-released at least a few times:

    - 1949, the same version but this time the film actually made some money.
    - 1955, in an apparent "widescreen" version.
    - 1998, the same "widescreen" version.

So, it is entirely possible that your friend caught one of these re-releases and maybe didn't realise it at the time?
