In 1971 Caroline Davidson was a design student in Oregon. She was asked by her professor to come up with a logo for his fledgling business which was running shoes. Caroline Davidson came up with a SWOOSH symbol, which has since become universally recognised as the Nike logo.
The SWOOSH logo is actually the wing of the Greek Goddess Nike. She is a goddess associated not just with victory but also with dominance and strength.
The shoe with the first Nike logo on it started to retail in 1972 and global sales followed.
In 1996 Nike took the very brave step of actually dropping Nike from its shoes and instead relying simply on the SWOOSH logo -and the gamble paid off. The logo was found to be so recognisable that Nike as a trademark was no longer required.
Caroline Davidson received $35 dollars for the creation of the logo, although some reports state that she is also paid commission on sales.
