Yes, you should be able to play any games from the previous versions of play stations. You can also play the blueray discs on a PS3.

Yes, you can. In general, the Playstation 3 is backwards compatible with the Playstation 2, assuming that the game comes from the same region of the world. The compatibility is not 100%, however. Some games are not compatible, but the vast majority of games are. Sony publishes an official compatibility list and you can check for compatibility with the US machine on this page here :
