People first settled in Reading (then known as Readingum) at the confluence of the River Thames and River Kennet in the eight century.
Reading was the largest town in Berkshire by the end of the 16th century. 3,000 people lived there. The population grew to 9,400 in 1801, and by 1900 the population was 59,000.
Large sections of houses in Reading are terraced, which reflects its 19th century growth. In the 20th century, Reading continued to expand. This expansion is shown through the number of 1920s built semi-detached houses, and also in the expansion in the 1950s, which joined Earley, Woodley and Tilehurst into Reading.
