Over 20% of Budapest's population was Jewish prior to 1945. Although the city's Jewish population has decreased, Budapest is still home to the region's most vibrant Jewish community.

The Jewish Quarter consists of over a dozen blocks in the heart of downtown Budapest. The area is bordered by a number of major boulevards on all sides, including Erzsébet Körút, Rákóczi út, Károly körút and Andrássy út. It is easiest to access this area by metro, at either the Astoria or the Deák Tér station.

By far the most imposing building in the Jewish Quarter is the Dohány Street synagogue, which is one of the largest in the world. Constructed in 1854, the architecture of the synagogue has a distinctly oriental flavour to it. Immediately behind the synagogue is the Hungarian Holocaust Memorial, as well as a small museum on Hungarian Jewish history.

The Jewish Quarter includes two other functioning synagogues, one on Rumbach utca and the other on Kazinczy utca, which are all within a short walking distance of each other. There is also a local market located at Klauzál Square, selling fruits, vegetables and flowers. For unique, local food, the Fröhlich Kosher bakery in Dob utca is also well worth a visit.
