My brother is a metallurgical scientist, so I have a little knowledge around this. You might also check out the Colorado School of Mines website if you want to see educational requirements, etc.
Metallurgists research, control and develop processes used in extracting minerals from their ores for refining metals work at mineral processing sites, mines, factories, workshops or foundries, or even in laboratories or offices. They generally work alongside or in tandem with mining or construction engineers, geologists, mineralogists, technicians, etc.
Here is a helpful website that provides a lot more information about metallurgist and metallurgy if you want it.
