Where Do Water Snakes Live?

The answer lies in the question itself. However, there different types of water snakes who live in different bodies of water. I will give you some examples. You have a type of water snake known as Helicops angulatus. This snake is a brown banded water snake and it thrives or survives in only fresh and brackish water. You can find it in tropical South America and Trinidad and Tobago, if you plan fishing there someday.

Another example is Liophis cobellus, is basically a mangrove snake found in Guianas, eastern Venezuela, and Trinidad and Tobago and they live in frogs, geckos and fish. Another type found is the one in Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago who live on frogs, frog eggs, tadpoles, fish, small birds and lizards.

What kind of water snakes live in Central Illinois, more precisely, Lake Clinton, near Clinton, Illinois.

One surfaced while we were swimming off the shore - about the size of my hand - is all I saw, the rest was submerged - It was brown with what looked like ridges over the eye. Please advise. Thank you.
