I would ask them what they would like to know then i would decide how much or how to answer the question. Usually just give them your work background and maybe a hobby or interest your into  and why you are interested in the job your applying for.some things your potential employer do not have the right to ask or know.

I think the "tell us about yourself" question is basically them asking why they should hire you--so stick to your college degree, job experiences that pertain to the job you're interviewing for, experiences with administration/oversight, if you have experience dealing with kids, why you want the job, and anything else as to why you're the person they are looking for.  And be extremely confident and firm in answering this question.  If you have nothing to say, have problems answering this question, don't appear confident, and the like, they are not going to want to hire you.
