Cognitive behavioural therapy (or CBT) is an effective way to treat patients suffering from CFS. However, the only drawback of CBT is that it can only be effectively used while conducting short-term trials and tends to lose its efficacy over a period of time, if it is not used properly, or if the method is employed to treat CFS patients in the long run.
The therapy is based on a patient's illness experience and the impact it has on his/her life. Improvement in function and symptom management, limited effect on pain and fatigue, a patient's positive response to the illness and the subsequent procedure of treatment, psychiatric factors, very slowly increased physical activity and special individual training under the supervision of a skilled specialist encompass the scope of CBT for CFS patients. The patient must be co-operative and respond positively to the treatment and strictly adhere to the protocol. He/she must take personal responsibility for change in order to avail of the benefits of CBT in the best possible manner.
